Master on Bollywood box office rut and stardoms

Folks easily missing the point with Akshay Kumar. Yes, most of them struggling but there’s a huge difference. Salman Khan has 2 releases and even with lazy 10 yr remake and hideous promotions and with a horrible director, Kisi ka Bhai, Kisi ji Jaan did over 26+ cr on Eid and Tiger 3 did over 42 crs on Diwali. That’s what the stars can do and if the content is bad, it’ll flop and that’s fine as long as you have pull.

On other hand, Akshay has seriously dented his stardom and that’s the biggest alarm. He had few flops like Bachchan Pandey but Samrat Prithviraj with his 40 day shooting seriously made him meme material and public lost faith in his work. Every thing else is going downward spiral after that and that year’s last movie Ram Setu was better than his other movies but couldn’t beat his negativity. By the end of 2023, his image has seriously dented and impacted his stardom. All started giving reasons like maybe too many movies and Akshay needs to space out releases.

So he took a break and came with Selfie in 2024, a Karan Johar production, albeit a south remake and 30-day full campaign and city-wide tours and multiple music video song promotions and so much effort, the public didn’t even want to watch him anymore. 2 crores opening is the stuff of legends after so much promotion and everyone was shocked. Now they blame it, no it was coz it’s a remake(even though no one in Hindi audience has watched that original, it’s not popular like Vikram Vedha’s original). Then he comes with another longer break and after a successful cameo in OMG2, he doesn’t want to promote Mission Raniganj and wants the movie to do the talking. Result? Again 2 cr opening. Now the blame went to, he should not do OTT looking films but huge production like Pathaan or Jawan. His next was Sarfira in Feb 2024, it was pushed to later in year and with full 6 months gap and recharged Akshay comes out with huge 350 cr production and again huge marketing campaign and interviews everywhere and visiting Dubai etc. Result? On Eid day, actual 10-12 cr (official is fake number 15, even that’s low). That’s seriously shows the disinterest from audience in giving Akshay a chance and signs of huge loss of stardom when audience doesn’t step into cinemas. Don’t give whole career examples and post 50 to 55 many stars loses stardom and it happened to even the great Amitabh Bachchan who had to move into older roles to get roles. Akshay is not old yet and looks fit but this is huge dent.

I’ve been giving analogy as male Kangana and that’s the point. Kangana can make huge movie, small movie or any movie but audience will not watch her anymore, period. She’s talented and all that but even her supporters have stopped watching her movies. Akshay is facing similar rejection from audience. Comparing with Salman is stupid now. He’s on downwar spiral too but not at this level yet and could have still opened BMCM to 40-45 crs opening easily on Eid day.

Ajay Devgn on other hand is incidental star who doesn’t have his own die hard fan following to drive a movie and it depends on projects and movies. If the project and movie trailer impresses, they’ll watch like Drishyam, Shaitaan but rest of movie even big budget or small budget, audience will give it huge cold shoulder. Eid release day with so much praise and 100 cr budgeted movie and you have 4 cr opening? That’s worse than even Selfiee opening. But that’s how his career have been, giving successful films and the giving disasters in same year. Ajay Devgn in Singham – audience will buy it without blinking but it’s not like Ajay Devgn can make 300 cr film like BMCM a blockbuster easily. He’s good mostly in sub 100 cr films unless it’s franchise films.

BOI had an article that Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn has highest disasters among big stars with both clocking around 22-23 disasters. This will not be the case for Salman, SRK, Aamir, Hrithik or others as they got minimum traction with opening and then movie flops but not like 2-4 cr opening from day 1.

Ajay Devgn is fine with his huge lineup for sequels and controlled budgeted movies and Singham3 or Golmaal5. Akshay needs to get back to comedies with medium budgeted movies and he should reduce his signing amount to 50 crores and make 2-3 movies per year. Signing Welcome3 at 300 crs and Houseful 5 at 300 crs budget is not the right way to select his comedy films.
